Beginnings
Toyism came about partly as a countermeasure to two decades’ worth of that which might be construed as an increasing “anything goes” Post-Modern individualism. The 1970s-1990s environment, that fostered works such as a fleck of human faces on a piece of paper, was long on sensation but often short on traditional skills. Fittingly, Toyism was born in the Netherlands where the time-honored craft of painting never quite went out of fashion.
Dejo, a visual artist and musician living in Emmen, wrote a manifesto and introduced Toyism to the Dutch public. In years since, the Toyists – whose membership fluctuates – have averaged two shows per year at venues around the globe.
Moeder/Mother
Moeder, which is Dutch for “mother,” is the manifesto of the Toyists. Mother’s contents are known only to the current Toyists, one Toyist emeritus and the notary public who affixed his seal to Mother on April 23, 1993 in Emmen. Do we need to know Mother’s contents? We don’t. All that is important is that we know three things.
1. Mother provides a framework for creation
2. Every Toyist’s creation is embraced as a new flirtation for Mother.
3. Mother was revised in October of 2002 in order to attract younger artists to Toyism.
Who are the Toyists?
Upon joining the group, each Toyist selects a pseudonym that must begin with a letter of the alphabet not already in use by another Toyist. After this point, and regardless of how one signs his or her rent checks, the artist signs all works with the chosen pseudonym. Why? It’s a collective, you see. It’s faceless. We fans of Toyism are not meant to single out John Q. Famous Artist or Jane Dough, Media Darling.
As of this writing, the Toyists consist of seventeen artists living on four continents. Seven of the sixteen members are female, which is physical proof that the movement means what it says about being inclusive. Ten of the Toyists have had traditional art school training; the other seven are autodidacts or self-taught.
What are the key characteristics of Toyist art?
• All works are narrative, meaning, as is so often said, that “every picture tells a story.”
• All works are a cocktail of figurative, abstract and illustrative, meaning they depict recognizable objects into abstractions.
• There are distinct outlines in Toyist compositions. Lines of contrasting color, rows of dots and even bands of color containing dots around objects are prevalent.
• Colors are bold and distinct from one another, not blended.
• Deceptively simple looking at times, Toyist works are not dashed off. They are, rather, heavy on skillful painting technique and craftsmanship.
• Themes chosen are common to the human condition. Work, eat, sleep (perchance to dream – there’s more than a tinge of the surreal going on here), play, procreate and please, do enjoy life and nature while you’re about these things.
• Cheery and humorous as its art appears, Toyism is a serious style that, upon closer inspection, often deals with subject matter that may be anything but cheery or humorous.

De Toyistische Beweging, oorsprong Emmen, nu wereldwijd.
“Lang, lang geleden werd er een kunstbeweging geboren, zij heette ‘Toyisme’. Geboren in Emmen, Nederland, uit één Moeder en vele vaders.”
Oké, het was niet eens zo heel erg lang geleden, het was in 1992 en het begon allemaal als een maatregel tegen het Post-Moderne Individualisme van de jaren ‘70/’90 waarin “alles mocht”.
De oprichter van deze beweging, Dejo, een kunstenaar en musicus uit Emmen, schreef op 5 september 1992 het manifest “Moeder” en introduceerde het Toyisme aan het publiek. Sindsdien zijn er wereldwijd kunstenaars aangesloten en worden exposities georganiseerd.
Het Manifest.
Dit manifest dat door de Toyisten is vernoemd als Moeder, omvat het palet van ingrediënten waaruit schilderijen ontstaan. Deze schilderijen zijn a.h.w. de kinderen van Moeder.
De inhoud van het manifest is enkel bestemd voor de kunstenaars die deelnemen aan de beweging Toyisme.
Wie zijn de Toyisten?
Op dit moment telt de stijl kunstenaars uit Amerika, Canada, Mexico, Maleisië, IJsland, Italië , Zuid Afrika, België en Nederland. Elke Toyist die zich bij de groep aansluit kiest een pseudoniem (schuilnaam). Dit pseudoniem begint met één van de letters uit het alfabet. Deze letter mag niet reeds in gebruik zijn door één van de andere Toyisten. Vanaf nu tekent de Toyist elk werk dat hij/zij maakt met dit pseudoniem. Waarom? Omdat het een collectief is, gezichtsloos. Er is niet één beroemde meneer X of mevrouw Y, allen zijn kinderen van dezelfde moeder.
De Toyistische filosofie benadrukt niet de persoon, niet het ego, maar voorziet in een bundeling van gevoel en waarden die gezamenlijk als collectief veel verder reiken dan het gezichtsveld van het individu.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste karakteristieken van de Toyistische kunst?
- Alle werken vertellen een verhaal.
- Alle werken zijn een cocktail van figuratief, abstract en illustratief, wat betekent dat herkenbare voorwerpen verweven zijn in abstracties.
- In de Toyistische composities wordt gebruik gemaakt van duidelijk
contrasterende kleuren, rijen stippen en gekleurde vlakken met stippen er in die om een object heen zijn getekend.
- De kleuren steken duidelijk tegen elkaar af, ze vermengen zich niet.
- Ook al ziet het er vaak bedrieglijk simpel uit, het zit vol met vakkundige schildertechnieken en vakmanschap.
- De gekozen thema’s zijn alledaags. Werken, eten, slapen (dromen), spelen, de voortplanting etc. En natuurlijk het plezier dat we (kunnen) hebben in het leven en de ons omringende natuur.
- Ook al komt het Toyisme vrolijk en humoreske over, het is een serieuze stijl die, bij nadere inspectie, vaak gaat over zaken die in het geheel niet vrolijk of humoreske zijn.
