Algorithmic Allegorical Art
A3 = TOYism
A perspective on TOYISM from an American software designer and artist
The Toyist algorithm is a platform for pure creativity. The artist doesn’t have to invent and prove a style, develop the combinations and permutations, select the right materials and palette, nor are they diluted by the effort needed for marketing, marketing materials, gallery shows, and promotions. The Toyist movement is a family that provides a supportive, holistic experience for the artist whose purpose is to paint and create. Toyism recalls your childhood with unabashed creativity and expression.
Toyists punctuate with concentric, multi-colored and almost always zipper-like series of equally spaced dots. These zippers sometimes join colored shapes or mark the transition between allegorical symbols. They are however, not Escher-like tessellations or tiling’s.
The dot is after all, the ultimate defining graphical component: simple and complete, period.
Dejo is a musician and one can see the effects music had on his development of the Toyist Manifesto. Toyists create within a rule set. Toyist notation is richly endowed with color palette, lyrical rhythm, allegory, amplitude, and transitions.
Like music composers fluent in notation, which is graphically simple, yet when coupled with creative genius, allows infinite variations. So can the Toyist with allegiance to the algorithm create unlimited variations of high quality images.
A3 = TOYism
• Emphasizes simplicity, craftsmanship, and consistent colors – strong designs
• Easy viewing: no eye popping color vibration from adjacent combinations like Royal Blue and Fire Engine Red
• Eyes are drawn to the allegory – keep looking and you will find additional meaning – in the graphic code.
• Above all else Toyism is a friendly, uplifting oasis in a world that increasingly focuses on the bizarre, the violent and the freak. Its artists and the manifesto are not about something dark, narrow, twisted, tortured, but about life and light…. It is all good!
