Toy-ism

New art forms are continually emerging; forms that repeatedly seek to convey new feelings about life. Frequently, these new genres are met with ridicule, disapproval and indifference. In hindsight, new works such as these often prove to be the embodiment of an aspect of the changing nature of life. Whatever attitude man adopts towards the discoveries of youthful artists, it still remains essential that he acknowledge and explore their work; thus enabling the observer to gain a correct view of what is taking place in his environment as a whole, and not simply the art world.

Toy-ism: “Isms” are distinctive doctrines, systems, or theories and in the art world they typically signify art movements or styles. The suffix (word fragment added at the end of a word to modify its meaning) “-ism” marks a word as one signifying a doctrine, theory, or system of principles; or an attitude strongly in favor of or against a given group; a distinctive or characteristic trait; an action, process, or practice; a characteristic behavior or quality; a state or condition resulting from an excess of something specified.

In de kunst duiken steeds weer nieuwe vormen op; vormen, die telkens een nieuw levensgevoel trachten te vertolken. Meestal worden deze nieuwe vormen bij hun verschijnen met spot, afkeuring en schouderophalen begroet. Vaak blijkt achteraf, dat in deze vernieuwingen een kant van het veranderende leven gestalte heeft aangenomen. Hoe men uiteindelijk ook mag staan tegenover de vondsten der jeugdige kunstenaars, het is toch steeds van belang, van hun werkzaamheid kennis te nemen; zo immers kan de beschouwer zich een juiste kijk op het gebeuren om hem heen, en niet alleen in de kunst, verwerven.

Toy-isme: “Ismes” zijn kenmerkende doctrines, systemen of theorieën en in de kunstwereld betekenen ze meestal bewegingen of stijlen. Het achtervoegsel (woorddeel dat aan een woord wordt toegevoegd om de betekenis te veranderen) “-isme” wijst naar een woord dat een doctrine, theorie of een systeem van principes betekent; of een houding sterk voor of tegen een bepaalde groep; een kenmerk of karakteristiek; een actie, proces of praktijk; karakteristiek gedrag of capaciteit; een staat of conditie, dat resulteert uit een teveel van iets in het bijzonder.
