This painting recounts the story of a voyage of discovery into the world of visual art; spanning from the Middle Ages to the present day. Although the composition is partly based on Rembrandt’s painting “The Steel Masters” this is not the subject of the painting. Here, six great masters of art are depicted as a party onboard a ship that has been named after them: The Golden Ark. These great masters are Lichtenstein, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Dali and Appel. Each master is accompanied on the journey by one of his masterpieces – each symbolizing an art movement: Pop Art; Impressionism; Cubism; Fauvism; Surrealism; and Abstract Expressionism (Cobra). The Golden Ark sails throughout the ages, leaving the various art movements in its wake. Eventually the ship ties up. The atmosphere and backdrop in which the ship finds itself is the birthplace for a new visual art movement: De Stijl (The Style)! Mondrian was an important proponent of this movement. The Golden Ark ventures further into the 21st century. Maybe she will encounter some new movements…

De Gouden Ark
Het schilderij vertelt het verhaal over een ontdekkingsreis in de beeldende kunst die loopt van de Middeleeuwen tot het heden. De compositie is deels gebaseerd op het schilderij “De Staalmeesters” van Rembrandt van Rijn. Maar gaat het hier niet om staalmeesters, hier zijn zes grootmeesters uit de kunst vertegenwoordigd, gezamenlijk gezeten op een schip, genaamd naar de combinatie van henzelf; De Gouden Ark. Allen zijn representatief geweest voor verschillende stromingen in de beeldende kunst. De zes grootmeesters zijn Lichtenstein, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Dali en Appel. Zij hebben op deze reis een van hun meesterwerken meegebracht die een stroming vertegenwoordigen in de beeldende kunst; Pop Art; Impressionisme; Kubisme; Fauvisme; Surrealisme; Abstract Expressionisme (Cobra). De gouden ark vaart door de eeuwen heen en laat de verschillende stromingen achter zich. Uiteindelijk meert het schip aan. De sfeer en achtergrond waarin het schip zich bevindt neemt nog een stroming in de beeldende kunst aan: De Stijl! Met als belangrijke vertegenwoordiger Mondriaan. De gouden ark vaart verder de 21ste eeuw in. Misschien komt ze nog wel nieuwe stromingen tegen….
