The Ship Conductor

At the heart of this painting lies an enormous sailing ship in the form of a conductor. The director as metaphor orchestrates the entire flow of operations by keeping the correct timing. Next to the conductor we see towering waves that must be tamed. On the right are trumpet players (personnel) who sway to the rhythm of the wave, while in the far left of the painting the music reverberates with the sound of violins and singing. It is extremely important that the correct timing is adhered to. Also, we can see turbulent times on the left, represented by a pirate ship engulfed in a storm. A great deal is at stake for the ship’s conductor; he needs to ensure that the ship is always on the right course and prevent it from capsizing as a result of towering waves. With beautiful sounds and the right timing the ship’s conductor is assured of a good result. The orange hull of the ship is unable to mask the fact that here we are concerned with the Dutch mercantile spirit that also casts its nets in foreign waters. The hull is poised over an orchestra pit and flanked by a hydraulic lift. Two musicians make their debut in the orchestra pit. Will they be accepted or not? The water becomes calm and on peering through the portholes (into the future) one sees more peaceful times ahead on the horizon.

De scheepsdirigent
In het midden ligt een grote zeilboot in de vorm van een dirigent. De directeur als metafoor, geeft de juiste maat aan bij de bedrijfsvoering. Aan weerszijden van de dirigent zien we vloedgolven die moeten worden getemd. Aan de rechterkant zien we de trompetspelers (personeel) meedeinen op het ritme van de golf en helemaal links in het schilderij klinkt de muziek met vioolklanken en gezang. Belangrijk is dat hierbij niet uit de maat wordt gelopen. Ook aan de linkerzijde zien we woelige tijden verbeeldt in een piratenschip dat in een storm verzeild is geraakt. Voor de scheepsdirigent staan grote zaken op het spel, waarbij altijd weer de juiste koers moet worden gevaren en kapseizen bij een vloedgolf moet worden vermeden. Met prachtige klanken en de juiste maat weet de scheepsdirigent zich verzekerd van goed materieel. De oranje romp van de boot kan niet verbloemen dat we hier te maken hebben met een Nederlandse handelsgeest die ook op verre wateren zijn netten uitwerpt. De romp hangt in een orkestbak met aan weerszijden een hydraulische lift. In deze bak maakt een tweetal muzikanten zijn opwachting. Worden ze aangenomen of niet? Het water gaat liggen en gekeken door de patrijspoorten (in de toekomst) breken rustigere tijden aan.
