Toyism Takes Over – simultaneous on 25 locations in the North of the Netherlands

Toyism celebrates its 25th anniversary with a simultaneous exhibition, on display at 25 locations in the city of Groningen and the province. On Sunday, October 8, the exhibition called Toyism Takes Over was opened in Galerie Kunsthof in Appingedam. After a speech by Mr. Remkes, a MindGame was played by toyists Lodieteb and Aniyina and with that the exhibition was officially opened. At each location you can find colorful works of the toyists consisting of paintings, graphic art and sculptures. The exhibition runs from October 8th till December 17th of this year. The Foundation De Noordelijke Kunsthof is possibly the oldest exhibition space of the North. Founded in 1951 in Appingedam by directors of the Maatschappij tot Nut van’t Algemeen, with the intention of “to let the common people in Appingedam and surroundings take knowledge of the Visual Arts”.

Since 1952, there were more than 250 exhibitions of all forms of the Visual Arts, and also concerts and lectures. Special exhibitions in the distant past included an exhibition of the 17th century masters Jan Steen, Van Ostade, and Van Ruysdael, in 1952. In 1954 and 1967 works by Jozef Israëls and Jacob Maris from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam were on exhibition. In 1955 on the occasion of the first anniversary there was an exhibition with work by Jan Sluyters, Piet Mondrian, Kees van Dongen and Charley Toorop.

Henk Helmantel has exhibited here three times, including his first official exhibition in 1972. Furthermore Jan van der Zee, Dick Bruna, Johan Dijkstra, Jan van Loon, Claus Hansen, Pol, Jan van der Kooij have shown their work here.
